About Me

"I am an Environmentalist, I care about the Nature"

Qazi Asif Saleh Qureshi

A brief intro....!

My complete name is Qazi Asif Saleh Qureshi and I was born to educator parents on 3rd of February 1986. I received my education till my first university degree from my home town (Nawabshah, Sindh-Pakistan). I started my career with my first job as Lab Engineer at the same engineering department (i.e. The Energy and Environment Engineering Department) where I was awarded my Bachelor’s at Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology (QUEST), Nawabshah, Pakistan. After about two years of work, I was offered Lectureship at Institute of Environmental Engineering and Management at an other renowned university of the Country, the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, Pakistan where I worked for a period of about a year. In 2012, I was offered and awarded a faculty position at QUEST and scholarship to pursue my higher studies abroad under a faculty development project of Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, Islamabad, Pakistan. Currently I am pursuing my PhD studies at Luleå University of Technology, Luleå, Sweden.

My Research

"This world is our home, nobody likes a dirty home to live in"

My Research Work

I am currently working on a project in which I am trying to look at the details of the destabilised coal mine waste rocks and power plant fly ash. The mine waste usually is laden with iron sulphides such as pyrite (FeS2) and pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS). They also generally contain trace elements such as As, Si, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Mo and Cr etc. The presence of such minerals and elements, the mine waste is usually destabilised provided the suitable environment and produces acidic leachate (often termed as Acid Mine Drainage and/or Acid Rock Drainage) that are laden with environmentally questionable elemental composition. On the other hand, the solid fuelled power plants produce ashes also composed of environmentally sensitive nature that, when in contact with water, transport objectionable elements (concentrations varying from µgl-1 to gl-1). Therefore, many countries around the globe want to dispose the ashes in as much as environment friendly manner as possible. The ashes produced from power plants are highly alkaline in nature that makes them a possibly suitable option for the treatment or even prevention of acid mine drainage.

My basic research interests include:

  • Wastewater monitoring and treatment
  • Mine waste management
  • Mine site reclamation
  • Power plant wastes and their safer disposal
  • Geochemical analysis and modelling of destabilised mine and power plant wastes
